Forgive me for not being up to speed on current chain technology but ...

The chain on my Sherpa is described on the invoice as "HG73 Chain 114 links 9 speed - New Special Rivet - Grey". Thinking ahead to removing this for cleaning, does an ordinary (i.e. 20 year old Park) chain tool work on the "Special Rivet" and how might that be identified? What's actually "special" about it?

Presumably I'll need to buy a small stock of New Special Rivets with which to replace the chain after each cleaning.

Hi Dantfo,

HG is for hyperglide, the shimano chains use special rivits that can't be reused. The new grey rivet is slightly larger so that it makes a good fit. If you use the old rivet there is a chance that it will work loose and fall out. I think that the ends of the standard rivits are slightly peened over so when you push them out the hole in the link becomes slightly enlarged. A standard rivet link remover is OK to use.

Hope this helps>

Dave.
