One tandem, one camera, twenty thousand miles of possibilities!
Dominic Gill collected his Rohloff equipped Raven Discover tandem and readies himself to embark on a journey from Alaska to Ushuaia collecting stokers on route!
Dominic Gill is leaving his home in Oldham, UK in June 2006 to bicycle 20,000 miles from Alaska, to Ushuaia at the southernmost tip of South America on a tandem bicycle, on his own…at least until he finds his first passenger!
“touring cycling allows you to travelling fast enough to watch the world go by but slow enough to take it in” Dominic says, “However, meeting people tends to be limited to stopping points”.
To overcome this barrier Dominic is setting off alone on a bicycle built for two; “ What better way to get to know the locals than offering them a seat on your bike?”
Dominic’s Rohloff equipped Thorn Raven Discover expedition tandem will be equipped with enough luggage space - including a trailer - to allow for whoever may want to join him. Dominic will also be taking a video camera to document the cultures and people with which he comes into contact.
“Whether they be L.A. businessmen wanting a novel ride to work or a Peruvian farmer wanting to get to the next remote village, my back seat is available to anyone, and I will hopefully find out a little about them while they’re in the saddle.”
His route down the two continents will take him from the Arctic Ocean in Alaska south to meet the Pacific at Vancouver. From here his journey will follow the Pacific west coast through Washington, Oregon, California and down on the Baja peninsular of Mexico. Once reaching the Mexican mainland he will cycle down through Central America to Panama, through Colombia, and down the west coast of Ecuador and Peru, moving slightly inland to Bolivia, Chile and finally Argentina.
The journey is expected to take approximately 15 months, though this depends on variables such as illness, weather, and any unforeseen situations on route!
The project is also raising funds for the charity Hope and Homes for Children (HHC, Reg No. 1040534), an international charity dedicated to providing a family and future for children orphaned through war, disaster or AIDS.
Dominic’s experiences will be documented over the duration of the journey on his website.
